DON'T TAKE OUR WORD FOR IT.
Our food bags and trash bags are certified to biodegrade by a third-party, EPA-registered lab in Berlin, CT. Our trash bags are also the first and only trash bags validated by UL Environment to biodegrade under anaerobic landfill conditions. Underwriters Laboratories, a trusted voice in testing and compliance for over a century, has validated the biodegradability of our trash bags under their Environmental Claims Validation program.
All our bags have been tested using ASTM D5511, the industry standard test for determining anaerobic biodegradation of plastic materials under high-solids anaerobic-digestion conditions. What does all that mean? Let's break it down:
- Anaerobic – It literally means "without air" and is the predominate condition of most active landfills.
- High Solids – This is scientific lingo for a dry disposal environment, another "average" condition.
- Digestion Condition – This means that there is microbial activity. Microbes thrive in all landfills – even in their dark, anaerobic depths.
So while there is no test for an "average landfill", ASTM D5511 simulates conditions found in most active landfills and is the most common test for simulating this environment. Our trash bags are expected to biodegrade within 1 to 10 years and our food bags within 2 to 15 years.
Also, in case you were wondering, ASTM stands for the American Society for Testing and Materials. It is an internationally recognized organization that sets testing standards for industry and government.
